What happened
On Saturday April 26, Cole Tomas Allen, 31, a California man with a master's degree from Caltech, charged through a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents' Association dinner. He was carrying a pump-action shotgun, a semi-automatic handgun, and three knives. A Secret Service agent shot in the chest survived because of a ballistic vest. Allen was arrested after Secret Service returned fire. He sent an email to family before the attack listing administration officials as targets ranked by seniority and stating he would 'go through most everyone' to reach them. He was charged Monday with attempted assassination of the president, which carries a potential life sentence. It is the third alleged assassination attempt against Trump since 2024.
The security failure is not that the attack happened. It is that the checkpoint system at a major presidential event had no ID requirement, no ballistic screening on an upper floor, and a design that placed a threat vector one level above the event. The review will produce a report; the structural incentives that produce these checkpoints will not change.

The first: the president should be protected by restricting his public presence and creating hardened, controlled environments. The Correspondents' Dinner represents the second approach: a large civilian gathering with mixed security where the president's attendance is itself a statement. But the first one has costs: it changes what kind of president Trump can be and what kind of democracy the US visibly has.
